Facilitating Dreams with Assistive Technology

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt. Indeed, our dreams and aspirations are beautiful if we cherish them and strive to reach them. Everyone has a particular dream, and it is the flight to that cloud of dreams that matters entirely. Many people usually attain their dreams because they take hold of every presented opportunity; however, there are those who struggle because opportunities are not simply granted to them. As an aspiring new teacher, I feel technology does help students enable their dreams, especially those with a special “gift.” Although I prefer using simple mechanics rather than using high-tech equipment, integrating technology to teaching is essential since today’s children are exposed to an abundance of innovative devices.

Watching the “Enabling Dreams” video has pushed me to enhance my technological skills for the betterment of my future students. It is vital for students to gain an understanding about technology, because technology is very beneficial to anyone, especially to students with disabilities. Through my previous observations, I frequently noticed computers that are just collecting dust inside the classrooms. I usually say to myself, “What a waste of assistive technology.” It is such a shame to leave such fine pieces of equipment at a lonely little corner when a student could be using it instead.

In order to accommodate students with disabilities in my lesson plan, I would allow them more time to accomplish their assignments and ensure that the necessary assistive devices are easily accessible to them. With the help of GSAT, I can determine what types of tools these students could use to augment their learning. Computers are such resourceful tools and would give these students an experience like never before. Suzanna Martini and Lukas Bratcher are prime examples of how great the advances of technology really are, since assistive technology has helped them discover their passions and life-long dreams.

In essence, assistive technology should be implemented in schools everywhere, because there are many students with special needs who each have a dream. When I become a teacher, I would like to provide my “gifted” or disabled students an opportunity to discover their dreams through the use of technology. My vision is that these “gifted” students would someday be a gift to others, the community, and the world by showing how technology can enhance wellness and lives.

Fractice for ED451

Boomshakalaka shish boom ba!

"Your blog is going to be your most media friendly tool. You can make tables it just takes patience. So has everyone put some text in and format it? You're going to spend time putting your assignments into your blogs. Make sure it's a very standard font. Helvetica is my favorite. Arial's fine. If I can't read it, I'm not going to grade it. Make sure there is lots of white space. And white space does not literally mean it has to be white, just give the reader's eyes a little room to breathe. I'm going to put a link, and I'm going to do it two ways. Ready? Ok. You need to tell the computer what you are going to link first. So I'm going to link this: http://www.uog.edu
One of the things I do is go to the site and copy the link. So all you have to do is 'paste' onto your post. When I did link, I did want to put in text. And I did not want this up here. It did it anyway.
What you need to do next... You've already made a link, you've made some text, what's next? ..... PUBLISH!" - Dr. Jacqui Cyrus
